BATTLE OF MIDWAY

Commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Midway by Co-Sponsors National Historic Aircraft Foundation and the United States Naval Institute was successfully implemented on June 20, 2007.
The venue was Virginia Beach, Virginia, the center of U.S. Naval Aviation on the East Coast as well as nearby Headquarters of the U.S. Naval Atlantic Fleet - more specifically, Virginia Beach Airport, at (soon to be named) Military Aviation Museum.

The following were the main features of the Commemoration:

  • Large gathering of invitees, including remaining surviving airmen of the Battle and other dignitaries.

  • Presentation dinner, including films of the Battle - film clips of interviews with survivors - a review by MAJGEN Wilkerson, CEO of U.S. Naval Institute - all in a 1942 "O-club" surrounding.

  • Presence - on ground and in the air - of several World War II aircraft including at least two of the types which were engaged at Midway
