The display being offered to
Norfolk (Virginia) International Airport will have a theme centering
on the U.S. Navy and Naval Aviation - and the central role Norfolk
and the Hampton Roads community plays in it.
The display will be designed and constructed by
the firm of Epstein International, Chicago, Illinois. They
also designed and constructed a "Battle of Midway" display at Midway
International Airport, Chicago.
Funding for the Norfolk display is being accomplished by a group
consisting of former U.S. Naval Aviators and selected local
contributors.
Preliminary estimate for the design, construction, shipment,
installation, and maintenance of the display is $472,000.
Approval from the Norfolk International
Airport Authority is expected to be completed in January 2010 -
with the display then to be completed and in place by April 2010.
DESCRIPTION
The design of the
Display will be elegant and simple - in the form of a kiosk. A
brief description is as follows:
The outside of the kiosk will carry words of
welcome to the "Gateway to the U.S. Navy's Atlantic Fleet and its
community." Also on the outside will be a list of contributors
to the display.
Above the kiosk will be a model - hung from the ceiling
- of the U.S. Navy's F4F "Wildcat" - the frontline fighter during
the early phase of World War II in the Pacific.
The kiosk will be approximately eight feet in height,
with ample room for walking inside. The Wildcat model will
have a wingspan of eleven feet and will weigh approximately 300
pounds.
-----------------------------------------------------
The
inside of the kiosk will contain computer screens, pictures and
holograms -
with film clips on the screens depicting the following:
-
Some history of the Navy -
possibly the Enterprise ships.
-
Battle of Midway
-
The Wildcat role - Pearl
Harbor through Midway
-
The F6F Hellcat, which later
replaced the Wildcat
-----------------------------------------------------
At present, there is no significant recognition of
Norfolk International Airport as the "gateway" to the U.S. Navy and
its Atlantic Fleet and Air Arm - and it is hoped that this proposed
display will serve to fill that gap.
